During the academic quarter in DC, all students maintain their UCI student status and earn 12-16 units for the quarter. Participants must be enrolled on a full-time basis, and take two or three of the following courses:

REQUIRED:

  • WASHINGTON SEMINAR (University Studies 194, 4 units graded)- a cultural and educational introduction to D.C. (guest speakers, field trips, colloquiums, etc.) to be taught by the UCI faculty in Washington, D.C. Click here for a past Seminar course syllabus.
  • FIELD WORK/INTERNSHIP (University Studies 195, 4, 6, or 8 units P/NP)- consists of internship-related assignments.

OPTIONAL:

  • ELECTIVE COURSE (University Studies 198, 4 units graded)- offered in many fields of interest, including politics, public policy, art history, sociology, media, and economics, and taught by faculty from all UC campuses. Click here for a listing of electives that have been offered in the past.
  • INDEPENDENT RESEARCH (4-8 units graded)- consists of independent research guided by the student's UCI faculty advisor at UCI.

All participants pay UCI registration fees and remain eligible for their UCI financial aid.

NOTE: We are offering a Fall Semester Program for a limited number of participants. Students selected for this semester option will do their academic course work in the same time frame as the quarter students, but will intern for a total of 14 weeks. The semester option is currently only being offered in the Fall.

You are required to live in the new UC Washington Center, located at 1608 Rhode Island Ave, NW, Washington, D.C., 20036. The new building includes living quarters for students, classrooms, state of the art teaching technology, a fitness center, classrooms, lounges and auditorium. The apartments are 2 bedroom/1 bathroom, four students per apartment, fully furnished, fully equipped kitchens, microwaves, cable TV in the living rooms, and high speed internet connections at every bedside. Housing costs are listed on our Program Costs page and include all amenities except meals, sheets, and towels.

Students from all majors are encouraged to apply.  Recommended but not required are:
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Junior or Senior standing
